Rangers add Cole Hamels to the roster

The three-time National League All-Star is scheduled to make his American League debut on Saturday night at home against the San Francisco Giants. In his last start for the Philadelphia Phillies, the 31-year-old left-hander no-hit the Chicago Cubs on July 25. Hamels was acquired in a seven-player trade that also brought left-handed reliever Jake Diekman to Texas.

We should be clear about this: Any trade for lefty Cole Hamels, the former World Series MVP of the Phillies and the only marketable commodity from baseball's salad days in that city, had to be about more than this season. Hamels is owed $23.5 million next year and the next year and the year after that, and so any trade for Philadelphia's ace was a long-term commitment.
